Te Puea Memorial Marae Komiti

The Marae Komiti has been the stalwart of the Marae ensuring that the day to day business of running a marae is completed properly and in accordance to the Marae Tikanga. From the management and facilitation of important whanau hui and tangi to ensuring the maintenance and upkeep of the Marae facilities and Marae administration, all roles and functions that are critical to the delivery of the Marae services. All Komiti members volunteer their time and effort to carry out these functions and they all carry with them entrenched generational whakapapa, or simply put, they are continuing the mahi that their tupuna once did before them. Marae Komiti also network within the wider community which has helped the Marae maintain critical networks and partnerships that are important and essential for the Marae, being located within a busy, diverse and growing metropolitan area. The komiti is led by an elected executive group and supported by committed marae whanau. All marae whanau are welcome to attend komiti hui and contribute what and when they can. The Marae Komiti also have a very close working relationship with the Marae Board of Trustees, each knowing and respecting their roles and functions.

Pai Maarire.

Established in 2008 to ensure the Marae was able to apply for funding grants and opportunities to fund rebuild projects at the Marae. Many of the Marae facilities are 56yrs old and in need of upgrades and redevelopment. The Marae has on average close to 158 hui each year, this includes manuwhiri from overseas, government agencies, local and national groups and NGO and many Marae Whaanau hui. Each hui will bring different koorero, networks, opportunities and expectations but it also means we need to be able to sustain our facilities and business needs. The Incorporated Society means the marae can ‘talk’ to the business community and funding groups and safely receive and invest funds and resources to support the ongoing development and ‘ora’ of our beautiful Marae. The Marae Incorporated Society is a duly elected body and has its own constitution.

The Marae has a huge history of establishing and supporting sporting groups and teams, noticeably netball and other sports activities that were used in the past and today to keep whaanau active, healthy and together. Today nothing has changed, with a variety of netball, touch, and indoor bowls teams all competing in local and national sports events, most notably the Waikato Tainui Games that are held annually under the supportive and watchful eye of the Kiingitanga and our King, Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero Tua Whitu. The sports group is supported by the Marae Komiti and are always a highlight for the Marae in terms of our rangatahi and annual activities and events. The sports groups are lead by a committed group of marae whaanau and support networks.

In 2016 the Marae opened its doors to homeless whaanau located in the wider Auckland area. The Marae was overwhelmed by the number of homeless whaanau who came to the Marae, many whaanau (mokopuna, rangatahi and matua) who were living in their cars / vans, makeshift shelters and overcrowded living situations and circumstances. The whaanau of the Marae were concerned and alarmed that this was happening in our country and wanted to give service to those who had very little and in need of urgent help. Maaori, Pacific, Ethnic and Paakehaa whanau all came to the Marae and shared their stories, whakamaa and mamae. The entire country also supported the Marae and donated generously in terms of clothes, money, support and volunteered their services and time. Marae pakeke provided the guidance and tikanga to the kai mahi and always reminded us always that we carried the name of a very important and respected Tainui wahine toa, Te Puea Herangi and that following her mantra koorero, values and principles of manaaki ki te tangata was all that mattered. Today, 2021, MTeR continues to support homeless whaanau into homes and help them get their lives back on track with employment, upskilling and education, but most importantly, we have maintained our strong relationships with all our whaanau, this we value and respect. To date we have placed 366 whanau into homes and helped them achieve whaanau ora and Mana Motuhake.
